Dr. Loushine specializes in everything from basic OSHA compliance to advanced data analysis techniques and research methods in EHS. In 2023-2024, Professor Loushine put his over 30 years of experience “to the test” by working part-time as a safety manager for Research Products Corporation in Madison Wisconsin. Todd’s career began with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and a fortuitus career initiation as a compliance officer with Minnesota-OSHA. He completed his M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with special emphases in psychology and sociology. Dr. Loushine has dedicated his life to educating and assisting others on how to systematically evaluate work, and manage organizations to improve safety, productivity, and job satisfaction. Todd’s approach to safety is systems-based and data-driven, which defines safety as an attribute of work and utilizes a quality management approach.
1. Archeological “dig” into the OSHA website, addressing the lesser-known sources of information such as the field operations manual, letters of interpretation, eTools/S&H pages, and compliance memos.
2. Preparing for an OSHA compliance visit from a CSHO’s perspective.
3. Presentation and discussion of inspection records, citation and notification of penalty, and other data and statistics.
\"OSHA Update\" sessions are always popular, but what if you couild find and review the same information provided to OSHA compliance officers? Todd is a former CSHO and has since built a successful career after OSHA. Bring your questions and be prepared to be amazed by the information you can find on your own when you know where to look and how to search.
1. Erroneous assumptions and biases in OSHA recordable data and calculation of incident rates
2. Clear perspective on how injury data is actually skewed, and therefore causes misinterpretation of averages and statistics
3. Better measures for safety performance that will actually lead to comprehensive safety improvements
Does your company use TRIR or DART as a measure of program performance or your job performance? Do you ever find yourself anxious or stressed having to convince others that the safety program is doing better than what the metrics show? In this session, we will review 7 years of OSHA 300A data uploaded to OSHA ITA to demonstrate how incident rates are unreliable measures of safety performance.
